Harvest Fair 2014

Today was a ton of fun! We shared our story and animals with patrons young and old. We opted for a larger setup this year including a few bins to showcase some of the goodies grown in our own garden. Our goal was to share with others the ease, benefits, and fun urban farming and gardening can be.  It's always a treat to see the reactions from people when they hear just how "large" our property is. If we can do it, you can too!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by today to say hello, ask questions, or to just pet the rabbits. We enjoyed our time representing the urban farming community at another wonderful Seattle Tilth event!

YOU'RE INVITED to the Seattle Tilth's 2014 Harvest Fair!

Come visit us at Meridian Park, September 6th!  We will be showcasing our beautiful bunnies and fat ol' birds and encouraging others to raise their own food too!  It can be done!

The fair is free and is located behind the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave., Seattle 98103) in the Wallingford neighborhood. There will be plenty to take in.  Please visit the Seattle Tilth's event page for more details:

A long day...

After six hours of visitors coming and going, we are wiped out!  Andy ate, took a bath, and remained here for about an hour before moving his nap to our bedroom.  I think we had about the same steady turnout as we had for last year's tour. There were first time visitors, returning visitors, visitors from as far as Eugene, OR, and local WS people too!  All had positive things to say and lots and lots and lots of questions. Surprisingly, we had an answer for just about every question!  We had a lot of fun and even hosted teachers from both Evan and Matilde's schools.  What a great experience!
Thank you to all who visited and if you couldn't make it today, please know that you invited over anytime!

Farm Tour Eve

We took care of last minute things around the house today and also ran a ton of errands.  It's been a busy day, but tomorrow is looking good. We hope to see a few of you here!
Wish us luck!!

Blurry Potato

The first potato of our 2014 harvest was a cute heart shaped potato. 💚 Cute or not, it has friends and they will taste splendid with a pat of butter and a pinch of s&p! Muwhahahaha!

Today we received our packet for the Seattle Tilth's Urban Farm Tour. We are motivated to get things tidied up and to fix a few things before the 12th rolls around. Please stop by and say hello!  We would love to see each and every one of you! If you need another excuse to come to West Seattle, it's also the street fair weekend, so visit and make a day of it!

Harvest Fair!

Today marked the 26th year for the Seattle Tilth's annual Harvest Fair!  We were invited to share our Oscars (broilers) and help educate those attending about the importance of knowing where your food is coming from and how easy it is to raise chickens for meat right here in the city. We were given advice, gave advice, played, danced, and networked with other urban farmers!  It was a long day. It was exhausting to explain the process with every person that walked up. The girls created a display board that said what breed our birds were and a few facts about chickens and broilers. A lot of people read the board and a lot of people were surprised at what they learned. Good job girls!
The hardest part of the day was being set up right next to the GOATS!  As many of you know, Matilde wants a goat more than any other pet, so being next to them was tough. She would sneak off and I'd panic for a second and realize she was watching the Eloise and Snowflake. She said (more than once), "I'm gonna get a goat, and I'm gonna name him Douglas!" We saw a lady get squirted by milk, so of course she ran over to check it out. When all of the sudden she was squirted too!  The owner was milking Eloise and pointing the teat right at Tilly!  It sprayed a stream of milk from her feet up her leg and on her face!  Tilly was waiting with her mouth open and screamed with excitement when she was hit!  She ran off laughing and told her papa what had happened.  She is such a goof!
It really was a fun day, and all of us enjoyed being a part of it!

The 2013 Seattle Tilth Chicken Coop and Urban Farm Tour

We were honored to have nearly 125 visitors to our farm today!  Some traveling from down the street and others as far as Milton and Woodenville!  We had a fun time hosting and the girls enjoyed selling cups of chicken feed and lemonade for 25¢. I still cannot believe we were chosen as one of the city's "Top 25" urban farms!  It was a real treat to show off the aspects of our garden that work and hear suggestions of changes we can make to improve and grow as farmers.
I think those who visited enjoyed their stop. Thank you to all who could make it, and remember all of you are welcome to El Gallo Blanco Farms anytime!

Be our guest!

We had our site visit with the Seattle Tilth today, and it couldn't have gone better!  She snapped pictures galore and was really surprised at how well we use what little space we have. We were provided with lots of pamphlets, flyers, posters, and cards to distribute before and during the big event.
We are very excited and feel prepared for a fun and busy day ahead.
Save the date: SATURDAY, JULY 13!

Daily update

70 today, but it didn't warm up until about 2pm. It made for a wonderfully warm Friday evening.

Four eggs today!

Good news today from the Seattle Tilth!  They have looked over our application for the 2013 Chicken Coop & Urban Farm Tour and we have been invited to participate as one of Seattle's "Top 25!"
We are over the moon, but we also have a lot of work to do before our site visit.
Andy has made a to do list and we will get started on it in the morning. First, the final planter box out front. Then, off to the backyard!  Anyone wishing to stop by is welcome!  The tour is Saturday, July 13 from 10am-4pm.  Please join us!
