Harvest Fair 2014

Today was a ton of fun! We shared our story and animals with patrons young and old. We opted for a larger setup this year including a few bins to showcase some of the goodies grown in our own garden. Our goal was to share with others the ease, benefits, and fun urban farming and gardening can be.  It's always a treat to see the reactions from people when they hear just how "large" our property is. If we can do it, you can too!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by today to say hello, ask questions, or to just pet the rabbits. We enjoyed our time representing the urban farming community at another wonderful Seattle Tilth event!

YOU'RE INVITED to the Seattle Tilth's 2014 Harvest Fair!

Come visit us at Meridian Park, September 6th!  We will be showcasing our beautiful bunnies and fat ol' birds and encouraging others to raise their own food too!  It can be done!

The fair is free and is located behind the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave., Seattle 98103) in the Wallingford neighborhood. There will be plenty to take in.  Please visit the Seattle Tilth's event page for more details:

Introducing...

The Ninja Turtles, Master Splinter, and Shredder!

Matilde and Evan had fun picking five new broilers and a turkey this week. We lost the other turkey to what we think may have been a bird of prey. Our Mr. Bowling enjoyed roosting high, so we will be sure not to wait before clipping Shredder's wings. By clipping a bird's wings it grounds them. We haven't done it to the Donnas or any of our other birds but none have wanted or attempted to fly out of the yard. Anyway, the NInja Turtles and Master Splinter are Cornish Cross chickens. We will harvest their meat around Labor Day. As for Shredder, he is an American Standard White turkey that will grow between 25-30 pounds by Thanksgiving! I am so excited and will do everything I can to keep this guy alive and well fed until November.

Thank you to Bradley Farms in Puyallup for ordering the bulk quantity birds and sharing their skills and knowledge with other farmers around the area! www.facebook.com/thebradleyfarm

Only bet on a sure thing.

Since we've split up on Saturday mornings, Andy with Evan to bowling and me with Matilde to tap, I have noticed that Andy has lost a few bets he's placed. Mostly things like "pick up this spare and I'll give you a dollar" or "pick up this split and I'll give you all of the money in my wallet" or "get a turkey (3 strikes in a row) and I'll get you an actual turkey"! He had made the last bet one too many times because after Evan's third or fourth turkey she demanded he pay up.  Which brings us to today.
Meet Evan's turkey, Mr. Bowling (the third strike).

Today/This Week

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here is our pie!  It was made by the girls. We used the canned apple pie filling from a few months ago. I hear that it wasn't as tasty as Grandma Dora's, but it was still an apple pie!  You can never go wrong with an apple pie!

It had a tad bit of a jelly texture. I'm not sure if it was after cooling or if it was because of the way I processed the filling. Any suggestions?

Andy's "turkey" is stuffed and ready for the oven!

Here's the "turkey" dressed and ready to eat! Believe it or not everyone who wanted a piece was able to get one! It looked and tasted just as yummy as the real one!

Andy has decided to make some "poor man" geese decoys out of cardboard. They're not ready just yet, but they are looking good so far!

I keep falling asleep early....

This is a photo of Cousin Ty's turkey!  He went turkey hunting in his home state (AZ) last weekend and bagged a bird for the big day!  He dressed it and now it patiently awaits a warm November afternoon with the Kraenzlers.  Congrats my friend and enjoy that warm fuzzy feeling of knowing where your food has come from! (Not that Safeway is a bad place for food to come from....)
